My, my, but the world is full of wacky coincidences…

So my parents came down to Goleta today for a BBQ put on by the Santa Barbara Sailing Club (of which they are members) and two very interesting things were discovered:

It turns out that my parents know (not know-know but used to be on amiable speaking terms with) one of the co-owners of the publishing company I work for. Apparently Ron (the co-owner) has been in the club for a long time and my parents knew him way back when. Hopefully this information will get circulated back to Ron, who wasn’t at the BBQ. Can you say “promotion”? I can too! At least I can dream. What is that? Nepotism once removed?

It also appears that Dr. Laura is a member of the club. My parents and their friends were speculating as to why she hadn’t joined the yacht club instead, and they decided that she was probably too afraid: those rich bastards wouldn’t hesitate to tell her she’s full of crap, but the “lower class” sailboat people will trip over themselves in awe of her. If that’s what she thinks, she’s got another thing coming. Apparently her boat was custom-made in Spain and has $15,000 worth of gold leaf – ON THE OUTSIDE!!! Does that woman know what salt water does to… well, to everything. What a dipshit. Perhaps some sort of boating “accident” will occur…. They happen all the time, you know….

In other news, today was quite the productive day. I went downtown to get my mom her birthday present and I made her card. That making-the-card business is getting really damn old. It started a few years ago when I didn’t want to buy her a card because a) I hate the cards at the store and b) I didn’t have any money at the time. So I made one on the computer – personalized, very clever, made with love, etc. But then of course she loved it and now I can’t go back. The pressure of coming up with wonderful and original cards is starting to get to me. The one I did this year draws upon that age-old standard, “this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs…” theme. Maybe later I’ll scan it in and post it here.

It’s an annoying routine I’ve gotten myself into, but my parents are good people. They stopped by today after their BBQ and surprised me with a bag of honey sticks they bought a few days ago. Mmmm honey in convenient plastic tube form. It’s almost enough to make you believe that the human race has some sort of a future.

Watched The Brothers Grimm today – not great, but it passed the time well enough. Some of the children-stealing scenes were #@$! disturbing. Heath Ledger is a nice piece of ass too. And it was blessedly cool in the theatre.

And, to top it all off, I actually did some studying for the GRE. God, why did I sign up to take it? I’m boning up on all the math I learned in middle school but have completely forgotten. Not hard but time consuming and rather humbling. It’s funny (and by funny I mean the exact opposite of funny) – initially, I wanted to go to grad school but I didn’t want to take the GRE and now I want to take the GRE (since I’ve invested the time and money) but I have no interest in going to grad school. Oh how fate twirls around! Meh.

You know what I did today? I slept a lot... and drew.

I'll just live life vicariously through you. Except for that GRE thing... but definitely the part where there is much observation about the quality of Heath Ledger's ass.

That depends on what the definition of... "definition" is.

Dude, I can't believe you joined. On moral principles alone. And just when I was drifting away from the cursed thing. I too hate the standard which I created way back when, for touching, homemade cards. I'll cross my fingers for your nepotistic rise to power. And mayyyybe I'll even write an entry before next century :)
